The State of the Nation is a biyearly report issued by the Science, Technology and Innovation Council of Canada. In 2012, I was tasked with designing and programming an interactive version of the report, while working at Seed. The visualizations needed to clearly show Canada’s position on four indicators as well as their ranking during 2008/10/12. The main challenge was that the project needed to work on Internet Explorer 7 in addition to modern browsers, i.e. we could not use d3.js and had to find an alternative development plan supported by all browsers. The final version was implemented mostly in pure JavaScript with jqPlot as a wrapper and Google ExplorerCanvas to simulate the canvas API in IE7.
